Challenge 6: The Infographic

Perhaps you’ve heard people say that “a picture is worth a thousand words”.  If this is true, I’m sure you can imagine the worth of a picture that includes charts, diagrams, and text along with those images.

For this week’s challenge you will:

  • Use Canva to create in infographic based on the recently released budget proposal from The White House.
  • Share this graphic on your blog just as I have
  • Write a blog post to accompany the graphic that explains what you’ve learned about the Education budget.  Make sure to cite specific pieces of supporting evidence.

It is up to you to decide how to best convey what you’ve learned from reading through the budget.  You might choose to create a diagram depicting changes between 2017 and 2018’s budget.  Or perhaps you will create a infographic depicting your analysis of the effect of such changes.

For inspiration, check out “Trump’s Budget Cuts Some Agencies to Their Lowest Levels in Decades” or  “Four Ways to Slice Obama’s 2013 Budget Proposal” – both articles have some fantastic graphics to accompany their writing.

For an additional challenge:

  • Read the section on the budget proposal for the Department of Education as well as one or two other departments.  Include this information in your infographic.
  • Read pages 7-11 of the Budget Proposal.  Determine the stated goal of the budget.  Then determine whether or not this budget would meet that goal based on the Major Agency Budget Highlights.  Explain why it would or would not in your blog post.
