Challenge 7: The Upstander

Bryan Stevenson, a lawyer, is a contemporary upstander who founded the Equal Justice Initiative to challenge bias in America’s justice system. In a 2012 TED talk, Mr. Stevenson tells his own story – a story in which he promises his grandmother that he would always “do the right thing, even when it’s the hard thing.”  In the talk, Stevenson describes his work and reflects on the connection between the power of identity and the actions that shape our identity.

For this week’s blog challenge you are to write an informal definition essay that explores what it means to be an “upstander” and how a person can cultivate the identity of an upstander.  Then identify a person who fulfills this definition.

For an added challenge:

  • Connect this definition to the fictitious Atticus Finch.
  • Embed or Include a link to more information about the person you identified.
